From Akira Kurosawa’s 1985 classic Ran, which is receiving a limited theatrical re-release on 25 March, Lord Hidetora, having taken refuge, is under siege by the combined forces of the armies of his sons Taro and Jiro in one of cinema’s greatest battle scenes. As the violence surges and the horrific carnage surrounds him, the heavens above stare on indifferently, and Hidetora succumbs to madness. Betrayed by his sons, punished for – and haunted by – his past, he wanders off, aimlessly, fated to suffer.
